Will's notes:

This song arrived one evening after watching the news about the war in Ukraine.  I sat down at the piano and wrote the song in about 10 minutes. Songwriters talk about songs presenting themselves from somewhere that we strive to be connected to, and we are just here to receive them. This is one of those songs.

I hope this song will bring hope to Ukrainians and will let them know that the world is with them. And I hope that it will inspire people around the world to do everything they can to help them in their resistance.

The recording includes Ukrainian singer Natashee Niaero and guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Vitaliy Tkachuk, both from Odessa, Ukraine. Will met with Nat and with Vitaily via Zoom to record and to discuss the tracks. During one of the sessions with Vitailiy, the air raid sirens were going off. Vitailiy kept playing, saying afterwards, "This is our life now."

Here are the lyrics (image is my original handwritten lyrics) along with an explanation of the verses that follows.

Sunflowers
words and music by Will Diehl – copyright 2022 William C. Diehl

in the quiet of the night
the horizon flashed with light
soon the sound arrived
then fire, smoke, and sirens wailing

Take these seeds
and put them in your pockets
so when we lay you down
sunflowers will grow

 Take these seeds
and put them in your pockets
so when we lay you down
sunflowers will grow

you heard what we said at Snake Island
and what our hero did at Henichesky Bridge
we will rebuild again
and freedom will be the future

Take these seeds
and put them in your pockets
so when we lay you down
sunflowers will grow

I will take another walk
and I’ll buy flowers on the street
I'll stop and see some friends
at the cafe where we always meet

Take these seeds
take these seeds
and put them in your pockets
so when we lay you down
sunflowers will grow
Take these seeds
and put them in your pockets
so when we lay you down
sunflowers will grow

Take these seeds
and put them in your pockets
so when we lay you down
sunflowers will grow...

Take these seeds
and put them in your pockets
so when we lay you down
sunflowers will grow
